Deadly Threadly 2018

Monday, April 09, 2018

Deadly Threadly 2018 was an exhibition to showcase the collective journey of four women inspired by their environmental experiences, cultural identity and feelings of belonging connected by the common motivation to use their art practice to explore and represent something personal, a connection to inspiration, a memory, a social commentary or a desire to experiment with the common language - thread.

Held in empty shop space that is the Chinatown redeveopment project HQ. The collection of work projected itself as something exceptional. Absent were the price tags and the red dots that indicate a work is sold. Red dots and their subtle suggestiveness that you were too slow or too stingy with your purchasing.

This was a collection of conceptual work. Each of the women peeling back layers of themselves to expose their personal fragilities and strength. Tomoko's work "Over and Over" an organic work that has grown over time has been exhibited serveral times previously in Broome. In each subsequent viewing its organic nature is on show with additional metres of fabrics being added to its life force.

The ephemeral nature of this exhibition is only adding to its allure. Rarely do people in Broome get to engage with or be challenged by conceptual art. However Deadly Threadly 2018 is indicative of the depth of artistic talent and thought that Broome harbours.

Deadly Threadly is on show until Friday April 13.
Participating artists including Jody Loaring, Tomoko Yamada, Jacky Cheng and Regi Cherini.
