The Shorebird Quest FREE Giant Puppet Workshops

Everyone is invited to help make giant puppets for The Shorebird Quest, a spectacular, one-show-only event to be performed 4 May 2019, on the shores of Roebuck Bay. The workshops will be led by professional puppetry and theatre artists, alongside Parks and Wildlife Yawuru Rangers and Nyamba Buru Yawuru Country Managers. The first workshop is on Tuesday 26 March, and people are welcome to stay for the whole time, or drop in for as long as they can. “This is an amazing opportunity for anyone in the community wanting to be part of a fantastic musical theatre event that celebrates migratory shorebirds. People will learn how to design, build and operate giant puppets with our team of professional puppeteers,” said writer and puppeteer Bernadette Trench-Thiedeman. The Shorebird Quest celebrates the migratory birds of Roebuck Bay through a fusion of musical theatre, puppetry and Yawuru Country knowledge. The final performance on 4 May, will feature giant illuminated puppets, storytelling, dance, and original music performed by local musicians and school choirs. “The shores of Roebuck Bay will light up for this musical theatre spectacular which brings the community together through Indigenous and Western cultural and scientific knowledge,” said Meredith Bell, Theatre Kimberley’s Artistic Director. The Shorebird Quest is one of Theatre Kimberley’s largest collaborative works to date, co-created by Theatre Kimberley, Broome Bird Observatory, Yawuru Rangers, Country Managers and YOU! This project is made possible with support from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund; the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program, supported by Royalties for Regions; Healthway’s Act-Belong-Commit campaign and the Broome Community.
