Flying Boat Wreck Walking Tour Part 1

Tickets for Parts 1 & 2 of the Tour. $55

Before we head out on the mudflats on Saturday morning,  lets enjoy a relaxed sunset fact sharing session at Mangrove point Jetty ( Town beach groin) on the evening of March 22, 2019. Here you will learn the story of Broome's involvement with ww2. The story of the Java-Australia escape route, in the face of the advancing Japanese Armies and the desperation to evacuate Dutch citizens from the Dutch east indies ( present day Indonesia) to the tiny town of Broome. Finally culminating in the escape routes closure, after the first of three attacks on Broome, the morning of March the 3 1942

We will learn the story and see images of the planes and people involved in this scarcely told story. The story of Broome, images of the town, the jetty.. All as it was in those war torn months in tropical Australia in 1942.

As the sun sets on that Friday evening, we will see, from our vantage point, the remains of flying boat 'Dornier X~1', as she starts to rise on the horizon line of the ebbing tide of a Roebuck bay sunset...

Part 1:  5.10 pm, Friday, 22 march 2019 Town beach groin.
Bring a seat, insect repellant, drinks and nibbles, a keen sense of history and binoculars, (if you have them, if not we will share what we have)

Part 2:
Having learnt the back story of that day in 1942, we will meet again on the dawn of the next morning, for part 2 of the tour... Saturday morning, the 23 of March 2019. 5;30 am, sharp. We head out on foot, from Town beach, due east, across the mud flats... As the sun rises over Crab creek, we will reach the first of the flying boats of Roebuck bay.

A reasonable level of fitness is required for part 2 of this tour. The journey is an approx 2 kilometre round trip, through ( at times) sloshy, ankle deep mud and water. But! - YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
